Getting Through the Workday During Divorce

|

One of the first things to fall away by the wayside when someone goes through a divorce is their motivation at work. Quite understandably, the pending divorce can be a major distraction that takes away both attention and energy. In some situations, especially after a lengthy marriage, feelings of depression or apathy are not uncommon. If you have found yourself in a similar state and are worried about your productivity at work, you should know that you are not alone and that there are steps you can take to help you gain focus again.

Follow these easy-to-remember tips to get your mind off divorce while you’re at work:

  • Declutter: For many people, the act of cleaning is thoroughly enjoyable and offers a pleasant, temporary distraction from more serious issues. Consider taking a morning at work to clear out your workspace and make it more organized. This can boost your work efficiency both by adding organization and also by removing the distraction. Make certain to take down any personal photos or souvenirs that remind you of your soon-to-be ex-spouse.
  • Share as little as you want: Unless you’re the only person working at your own company, someone else is bound to notice your drop in productivity after you file for divorce. You should not feel obligated to share any information you would rather keep private. You should feel comfortable saying a statement along the lines of “I’m sorry. I appreciate your concern, but I am going through some personal, family issues.” If you do want to share, also keep in mind not to dump too much information on someone else, as this could make them feel uncomfortable in the workplace.
  • Message filter: Do not send divorce-related messages directly to your work email or accounts. Try to keep those away from the workplace and waiting for you at the end of the day. It might seem bad to get bombarded with many messages as soon as 5:00 PM rolls around, but it will be better than having to sort through them when you are on the clock. Use your smartphone as infrequently as possible, too.
  • Extra help: Have you always been thinking of taking up an extra task to impress your boss or increase your company’s profits? Now might be the time, as additional work can keep your mind focused elsewhere. Just make certain you know what extra jobs you are grabbing and that you will be committed to them.
  • Melodious: You don’t need to look far to find a therapist that believes relaxing music can actually positively impact your mood. If your workplace allows you to listen to music while on the job, you should load up a playlist of songs that are mellow and not distracting. Sometimes ambient noise soundtracks, like rain on a window, can also boost both mood and productivity. Just steer clear of any songs your spouse really preferred.
